What is this movement about? The Pro-Choice Movement focuses on protecting the right of women to have a safe and legal abortion. According to the “National Abortion Federation” website, the term “pro-choice” was not used until after the Roe vs. Wade case which happened in 1973. This U.S. Supreme Court case ruled that it was legal for a woman to get an abortion without any government interference. Although this was a huge accomplishment for the movement, there has long been a counter movement to overturn this landmark court decision.
The Pro-Choice Movement focuses on advocating for sexual freedom and the ability for a women to choose to do what she wants with her body. The movement's goals consist of educating people about "medically accurate and unbiased information on surgical and medical abortion and quality assurance in abortion care" (National Abortion Federation). The movement also aspires to provide access to abortions to women all over the United States while abolishing all laws preventing women from doing so.
